SCOUT-O3 Validation and Intercomparison of
Coupled Chemistry Climate Models (Workpackage WP1.1)
Work Package Leaders: Neal Butchart (UKMO) & Veronika Eyring (DLR)

CCM Validation Activity for SPARC
Partners: All CCMs worldwide

 Scope:

  1. Validation of coupled climate-chemistry models by process oriented model inter-comparison and by comparison with observations (satellite data like ENVISAT, in situ measurements in the UTLS region (e.g., POLINAT, MOZAIC, CARIBIC), meteorological re-analyses like ERA40, chemical data assimilation). The validation will be based on a  table of key diagnostics that has been defined at the CCM 2003 workshop in Grainau, Germany, November 2003.
  2. Inter-comparison of scenario simulations by standardised tools.

During the first phase model validation will be based on transient 1980 to 1999 model simulations already existing before SCOUT-O3 started.  These model runs have not used identical model designs, as they have been performed for different tasks.  Nevertheless, validating and comparing these runs will allow specific deficits of the individual participating models to be identified.

In subsequent phases the output of SCOUT-O3 runs with agreed experimental design will be analysed.  This will allow us to assess the quality of the models and to provide information on the model-to-model variability, in particular with respect to our predictions.

This work will be done in conjunction with the CCM Validation activity for SPARC (CCMVal).
All CCM groups worldwide are welcome to join in the inter-comparison.
