Difference of 72-h RMS forecast error of 500 hPa geopotential height (gpdm) in the period of 15-28 November 2003 between one experiment with lidar data and one without. Negative values indicate a reduction of the forecast error.

Mean reduction of the forecast error of geopotential height over Europe for 4 experiments with lidar observations (Median, 4Rev, 1Rev, and 4RStd) and one experiment with 100 dropsondes (Drops). The forecast error was averaged over 29 forecasts started between 14 and 28 November 2003. The relative reduction of forecast errors was in a range of 1-6%.
