Research Areas

Aerosol Optical Properties, Aerosol Absorption, and Black Carbon

Method Development and Evaluation

Development of a novel method for the determination of the aerosol complex refractive index from aerosol absorption measurements at several wavelengths in the blue to red spectral region; application and evaluation of this method for mineral dust (Petzold et al., 2009).

Intercomparison of optical and thermal carbon-specific methods in close collaboration with the University of Vienna and Vienna University of Technology (Hitzenberger et al., 2006; Reisinger et al., 2008).

Development and evaluation of a new optical absorption method (Multi-Angle Absorption Photometry MAAP) for the continuous measurement of the aerosol absorption coefficient in close collaboration with research activities in the USA during the Reno Aerosol Optics Study 2002 (Petzold and Schönlinner, 2004: Petzold et al., 2005).

Laboratory Studies on Properties of Mixed Aerosols

Laboratory studies at the German aerosol chamber facilities at the Research Centre Karlsruhe on mixtures of absorbing and non-absorbing aerosol components, investigating the link between chemical composition and optical properties in particular for carbon-containing aerosol (Schnaiter et al., 2005).

Follow-on study at the Karlsruhe aerosol chamber facilities on mixing of mineral dust and carbon aerosols in April 2008.

Source Characterisation

Characterisation of anthropogenic and biogenic sources of combustion particles, microphysical, chemical and optical properties of particle emissions from aircraft engines (Habilitation thesis 2005) and large marine diesel engines (Petzold et al., 2008) as the main sources of particulate matter from the global transportation system, including the use of biofuels (EU IP HERCULES and QUANTIFY, German BMBF-project BIOCLEAN).

Spatial-Temporal Variability and Processing of the Tropospheric Aerosol

Spatial-temporal variability of the aerosol absorption coefficient of the free-tropospheric background aerosol using a MAAP network on the Central European mountain sites Jungfraujoch (CH; Cozic et al., 2008) and Hohenpeißenberg (GER), and on the Italian research station Pyramid in the Himalayan Mountains (Bonasoni et al., 2008).

Spatial-temporal variability of the tropospheric aerosol over Europe, investigated by dedicated aerosol characterisation experiments LACE 98 (Petzold et al., 2002) and EUCAARI (conducted in May 2008), and used for model validation purposes (Stier et al., 2005; Petzold et al., 2007).

Mixing of light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosol from savannah fires and from anthropogenic emissions with mineral dust and its effects on the radiative properties of the mixed aerosol; key research topic of the SAMUM field studies in 2006 (Petzold et al., 2009) and in 2008.

Long-range transport of black carbon from biomass burning in North America towards Europe and its impact on the European free tropospheric aerosol, including the impact of cloud processing on the carbonaceous aerosol (Petzold et al., 2002; Petzold et al., 2007).

Cloud condensation nuclei activation and processing of combustion particles (Petzold et al., 2005; Petzold et al., 2008), and of the atmospheric black carbon aerosol (Cloud and Aerosol Characterisation Experiment CLACE, Jungfraujoch; Cozic et al., 2007) as the major sink process for carbonaceous particles from combustion processes.

Fast and Robust Measurement Techniques for Nanometer-sized Particles

Development of a combined approach of condensation particle counters and diffusion screen separators for the fast measurement of particle size distributions in the sub-100 nm scale (Feldpausch et al., 2006).

Development of an automated instrumentation for the routine measurement of aerosol properties on board of aircraft in service (ongoing EU Infrastructure Project IAGOS).
