SALTRACE Workshop
The first SALTRACE data workshop took place in Oberpfaffenhofen on 2 and 3 December 2013. We got a good overview about the available data and studies planned with them. Thanks to everyone attending and the many presentations of first results and further plans. The next workshop is planned for May 27 and 28, 2014 in Leipzig. 3 Dec 2013
Save the date: SALTRACE Workshop
We will have a first 2-day workshop to coordinate the next steps of work on the SALTRACE data set on 2 and 3 December 2013 in Oberpfaffenhofen. 3 Sep 2013
Falcon back in Oberpfaffenhofen
The Falcon returned safely to Oberpfaffenhofen on 15 July 2013. Thanks again to everyone involved for a great field experiment where we gathered an impressive amount of valuable data. We are looking forward to many publications on all aspects of Saharan dust in the Caribbean. 15 Jul 2013
Sampling of biomass burning plumes
On the way back to Germany via USA, Canada, Greenland and Iceland, the Falcon sampled extended biomass burning aerosol layers originating from forest fires in North America. 14 Jul 2013
Falcon on the way back home
After another local flight in the dusty air over Barbados the Falcon took off with direction Puerto Rico, the first stop on the way back to Germany. On the way we got yet another sample of several thick dust layers. We wish to thank everyone involved in Barbados for the great support and the warm welcome making our stay on this wonderful island a big success.11 Jul 2013
Local flight, Barbados area
On 5 July we performed another local flight in the Barbados area for a high resolution vertical column sampling of aerosol layers. Currently there is only little dust in the atmosphere so we got a good sample of the variability of dust conditions. 6 July 2013
Return from Puerto Rico
The Falcon returned from a very successful set of flights in the Puerto Rico and Antigua area on 1 July also sampling the plume of the Soufriere Hills Volcano on the island of Monserrat on the way.2 July 2013
Measurement flights to Puerto Rico
This morning the Falcon aircraft took off for a two-day mission to Antigua and Puerto Rico. We aim to study wet deposition of mineral dust and take airborne data for intercomparison studies with ground-based measurements in Puerto Rico. 30 Jun 2013
Local measurement flights around Barbados
We performed a number of local flights in the Barbados area sampling dust at various altitudes. On 22 June we performed a lagrangian sampling of dust which was previously characerized on 17 June in the Cape Verde region and on 21 June east of Barbados. 24 Jun 2013
Falcon enroute to Barbados
On 17 June the Falcon aircraft started the transfer across the Atlantic Ocean to Barbados where it is expected to arrive in the evening of June 18. 17 Jun 2013
Dust characterization over Senegal and in the Cape Verde region
At 9 UT, the Falcon took off for another measurement flight from Sal, Cape Verde with direction Senegal. The plan is to characterize rather fresh dust over Senegal with a flight pattern similar to the one used on 12 Jun 2013. 14 Jun 2013

First measurement flight
The Falcon took off for the first measurement flight from Sal, Cape Verde with direction Senegal. The plan is to underfly CALIPSO near Dakar. 12 Jun 2013
Falcon is on the way
The Falcon took off with destination Faro (Portugal) at 14UT from Oberpfaffenhofen. Expected arrival time in Sal, Cape Verde on June 11 in the afternoon. 10 Jun 2013
Falcon ready for measurement
After another test flight on June 7 the Falcon payload is fully now operational. If everything goes well we will be on the way to our first stop on the island Sal in Cape Verde on Monday June 10th. According to model forecasts there should be a larger dust outbreak coming from the Saharan desert toward the Cape Verde islands right now. Perfect conditions for the start of the field experiment. 7 Jun 2013
Test flight with complete payload
After complete integration of the SALTRACE payload we performed another test flight on May 28th making use of the only sunny day in Bavaria during this week. Most instruments performed well during the flight.28 Jun 2013
First test flight
The Falcon performed a first instrument test flight on May 24 with a subset of the final payload to test especially the new instruments CCNC and CAS-DPOL. The test were overall successful such that we can continue with the integration of the remaining payload now.
Decision on Falcon operation base
During the very successful site visit to the Caribbean last week we experienced a lot of support from local authorities. The decision was made to operate the Falcon research aircraft from Barbados Grantley Adams International Airport (TBPB). This will greatly simplify the interaction with the teams conducting ground-based measurements at the CIMH campus and at the Ragged Point observatory on Barbados - 28 Mar 2013.
Site visit - Mar 18 to 26
Team members from DLR-IPA and FX are currently visiting sites in the Caribbean to scout out campaign locations on Barbados, Antigua and Trinidad & Tobago.
SALTRACE Kick-off meeting
On 28 Jan 2013 we had a very inspiring meeting in Leipzig marking the beginning of the hot phase of SALTRACE 2013.
